Drive Core: autonomy-ready power for heavy machines

Heavy machines – construction, mining, agriculture, defence – share the same unsolved problem: they run on diesel, they can’t be automated, and replacing them costs millions. This is where the “Drive Core” drive platform, developed by the ETH spin-off 4QT, comes into play.

The Drive Core is a modular powertrain that is 50% more efficient than conventional alternatives. Due to its modular battery system, it can be powered by any energy source – whether diesel, hydrogen, or solar energy. A digital control interface and open-source software make it compatible with any automation system – allowing the machine to be controlled remotely or operated fully autonomously.

What makes the Drive Core unique is that it can be installed not only in new machines but also in existing ones – without modifying the machine itself. This allows machines to be electrified and made capable of autonomous operation while remaining compatible with future energy sources. This extends their service life and facilitates the transition to more sustainable technologies.

The concept was first proven in the construction industry: Together with the Swiss construction company WALO Bertschinger, 4QT built the world’s first fully electrified 8-metric-ton dump truck. Based on customer feedback, a hybrid-electric version was developed in collaboration with the innovative Swiss machinery manufacturer Menzi Muck – and validated during a real-world customer roadshow on actual construction sites. The same Drive Core is already being used in the defense sector and is expected to be deployed in the future for applications in mining, agriculture, and even space. 4QT is an ETH Zurich spin-off, supported by Innosuisse.
